Hard hearts….

As I read through this week’s Torah portion Va’era and Bo “And I appeared” and “Come” Exodus 6-13 – there is so much to ponder with these texts I love the lessons we can learn from them.

Often people wonder about the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart. There are many reasons that I have read about this. One is that Pharaoh was filled with pride. He exalted himself over all peoples, he had access to the Egyptian gods and saw himself as all powerful. But also Pharaoh was cruel to the Hebrews and also to the poor in his land subjecting them to slavery. I have heard on the History Channel that Egypt historians say that the Hebrews were not in slavery but paid very well. We know they were in slavery because YHWH says they were. So my mind went back to one His promises to Abraham –
Genesis 12 And YHWH said to Abram, “Go yourself out of your land, from your relatives and from your father’s house, to a land which I show you. “And I will make you a great nation, and bless you and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing! And I shall bless those who bless you and curse those who him who curses you. And in you all the clans of the earth shall be blessed.”
YHWH was remembering his covenant with Abraham when He came to lead his descendants out Egypt.
Genesis 15.13 – “Know for certain that your seed are to be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years. “But the nation whom they serve I am going to judge, and afterward let them come out with great possessions.”
Now did the Pharaohs value the Hebrews or curse them? What did YHWH say He would do. He said that Pharaoh’s heart was hardened to so He could show His wonders. Even today we marvel at it all. YHWH showed His rulership over the earth in many forms, the waters, the insects, even with fire filled hail. The light and the dark; he has rulership over all even death.  The Egyptians had a god for all that was manifested in His judgments. They even had a god of death and all their petitions of their god of death did not stop YHWH’s judgment. But those who did as YHWH said – even those born of Egyptian descent and gave their worship and obedience to YHWH did not perish.

My mind comes forward approximately 4000 years to the cross. More hardened hearts. Both Romans and Jews alike, They were not loving Yeshua when they were striking Him with whips made with metal pieces, spitting on Him, shoving a crown of thorns on His Head, shouting endless hate filled insults at His Face….Creation’s hatred for it’s own Creator, you can’t expect to live if you hate the source of your life; hatred nailing Him to a piece of wood with nails, hard hearts selling Him out, conspiring to kill Him. Why did Elohim allow human’s hearts to be so hard? He doesn’t want to control us as robots, but He wants us to take a good look at what a hard heart will do. A heart turned away from Him.  A heart that makes covenant with His enemies…. Look what we did to our Creator…. But if we do what He told us to do “Repent and turn back to Him – listen to Yeshua…..

So much to consider but for today I am considering hard hearts. King David said in psalms that a hard heart is a curse. Hard hearts commit spiritual adultery, murder and hatred. I will keep tying to apply my heart to understanding and the circumcision of my heart .  A heart circumcised to Our Creator and His Covenant – even Renewed in Yeshua’s Blood, it is often painful because this means a tender heart….

Moving away from the cross 2000 years ago to today. There are some people who will hate us. We know the reasons, the spiritually charged atmosphere is still here. We just make peace with those it is possible to and move gently around the rest. Speaking when necessary but realizing that “they know not what they do”.   Praying for loyal heart to Yeshua as He leads us to the Father to our destination.

  1. “Spiritually charged atmosphere” isn’t that the truth!? Is it just me, or is it getting more and more charged lately? I liked this line; Hard hearts commit spiritual adultery, murder and hatred – good stuff lady! Keep writing!
